Free Courses

16-18 Students (Age at 31st August)

  • All Full Time Courses

19-23 Students (Age at 31st August)

  • Students studying their first level 2 course
  • Students studying their first level 3 course (Some level 3 courses are not included, so please check with Student Services)

Apprenticeships

  • Apprenticeships are free of charge for the learner (you are actually paid a salary!)
  • There is no upper age restriction to enrol onto an Apprenticeship programme, so long as you are 16+ years old.
  • Working hours are usually between 30-40 hours per week which includes your release to College.
  • There may be a fee for the employer willing to support you, but this depends on a few factors.

Course Overview
Hairdressing is an extremely exciting business and there are many different opportunities. Most progressive salons will expect their staff to attain the NVQ Level 3 Diploma. This course is designed to build on your passion for the hairdressing industry using your existing knowledge and is aimed at committed stylists who are interested in enhancing their career in the industry.

What Qualifications Or Experience Do I Need?
You should be a practising hairdresser and have obtained NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing. Selection will be made on the basis that you have a salon to complete your apprenticeship, an interview and initial assessment. Personal qualities such as self-motivation and a genuine interest and commitment to study is essential.

How Long Is The Course?
This course will run for an 18 month framework. You will attend college one day a week at any of the three venues, listed above. Reviews and assessments will take place in your workplace every 8 weeks.

What Will I Learn?
You will learn through the following units all level 3 aspects of creativity with the salon:

Provide client consultation service Creatively style and dress hair creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques Creatively colour and lighten hair Hair colour correction services

Contribute to the planning, implementation and evaluation of promotional activities


How Will I Learn?
You will learn in a modern, well equipped, state of the art hairdressing salons, using industry standard equipment and high quality products. Access to the latest online learning materials will be available, delivered using smart boards and plasma screen TVs. The course will be taught using a variety of approaches including practical work, directed learning on computers and independent study.

How Will I Be Assessed?
Assessment will take place in college and when your Assessor visits your workplace. They will help you identify suitable work evidence to collect, observe your performance, give guidance when writing personal statements, carry out professional discussions and give you feedback on how you have met the learning outcomes and evidence requirements. At each visit, the Assessor will agree and record an action plan with you and provide you with written feedback. You will also complete online tests.

Where Could This Course Lead To?
An NVQ 3 in Hairdressing could lead to positions such as Salon Manager, Senior Stylist, Colour Technician, Teacher/Educator or work on a cruise liner.
