  • Apprenticeships are free of charge for the learner (you are actually paid a salary!)
  • There is no upper age restriction to enrol onto an Apprenticeship programme, so long as you are 16+ years old.
  • Working hours are usually between 30-40 hours per week which includes your release to College.
  • There may be a fee for the employer willing to support you, but this depends on a few factors.

Course Overview
The course is aimed at those wishing to obtain a Higher National Certificate either to enhance their career or as a vocational path into Higher Education. The Edexcel Higher National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering is a Level 4 qualification, consisting of a minimum of 120 credits, which can equate to year 1 of a Bachelor in Engineering (BEng) course of study.

What Qualifications Or Experience Do I Need?
'A' Levels in appropriate subjects or a National Certificate/Diploma in Engineering. Mature students with no formal qualifications may be accepted with the division's approval. It is normally an entry requirement for students to have a Level 2 qualification in Maths or English, initial assessments may be required to check your literacy and numeracy levels.

How Long Is The Course?
Two Years

What Will I Learn?
Year 1: 30 credits of core units - Analytical Methods for Engineers, Engineering Science; 45 credits of optional units - Advanced Computer Aided Design Techniques, Programmable Logic Controllers, Management of Projects.
Year 2: 15 credits of core unit - Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation; 30 credits of optional units - Mechanical Principles, Materials Engineering; (other optional units can be considered depending on the requirements).

How Will I Learn?
The course uses a student-centred learning approach in which care is taken to relate theoretical principles to practical engineering application.

How Will I Be Assessed?
Each unit is assessed using a variety of assessment methods, e.g. assignments (written/practical), unit phase tests and unit end tests. Assessment is College-based but is monitored by Edexcel as the awarding body.
