Course Overview
This study programme will enable you to work with a wide range of animals and develop sound practical skills. The college uses an off-site centre to provide industry-relevant experience in working with small animals. Units of study in the programme will also provide you with underpinning knowledge of animal health, behaviour, food and care requirements. Most students would progress to the level 2 programme.

What Qualifications Or Experience Do I Need?
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however you will need to complete an interview and English and maths assessment to demonstrate your ability to work at level 1. During the interview you will be asked to complete some writing exercises to show you are suitable for the programme. You will need to show us that you are able to take on the responsibility of caring for animals, observe their behaviours and be able to carry out instructions.

One Year

What Will I Learn?
This study programme involves theory and practical, which will allow you to develop your skills in all areas of animal care, including animal health, animal feeding and accommodation and animal handling. There will also be an emphasis on gaining an understanding of basic animal behaviours in captivity and in the wild. As part of your programme you will get the chance to develop your English and maths skills and depending on your previous results take qualifications in these subjects.

How Will I Learn?
Vocational and professional qualifications are taught through college based theory and practical lessons with further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study.

How Will I Be Assessed?
Assessment consists of internally set coursework and assignments as well as externally set health and safety test.

Where Could This Course Lead To?
Students generally progress onto the level 2 course or move into full-time employment performing animal care duties under supervision. Typical areas of employment include working in animal rescue centres, kennels, catteries, pet shops and related services.
