Course Overview
The level 1 Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery is aimed at learners looking to progress into site carpentry. Most progress to level 2 before entering a job role in the industry. Carpentry and Joinery students will learn the basics of wood work fixtures and fittings. We will teach you the health and safety aspects of working in a workshop and on-site as well the proper preparation and maintenance of the tools you will use on a daily basis. You will learn to produce high quality work in a safe environment that encourages creativity.

What Qualifications Or Experience Do I Need?
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however you will need to complete an interview and English and maths assessment to demonstrate your ability to work at level 1. During the interview you will be asked to complete some practical exercises to show you are suitable for the programme. You will need to show us that you have an eye for detail and can develop the maths skills needed to work out measurements and the ability to work from technical plans.

What Will I Learn?
If you undertake the Level 1 Certificate in Carpentry & Joinery you will cover core knowledge in construction technologies, technical information, health and safety and work related skills such as communication. You will learn key practical skills in using hand and portable power tools, producing a range of woodworking joints, cutting techniques and woodworking techniques used in new construction and repair. You will also complete the Level 1 Award in Health & Safety in a Construction Environment. This enables you to apply for a Construction Operative card to be able to work on site. As part of your programme you will get the chance to develop your English and maths skills and depending on your previous results take qualification in these subjects.

How Will I Learn?
Vocational and professional qualifications are taught through college based theory and practical lessons with further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study. You will be asked to engage with a number of community projects such as the refurbishment of buildings to further develop and practice your skills in a real environment.

How Will I Be Assessed?
Assessment consists of internally set coursework and assignments as well as externally set practical tests.

Where Could This Course Lead To?
Students generally progress onto a higher level Carpentry & Joinery course, move into a job with training (such as an apprenticeship) or move into full-time employment. Typical areas of employment include working on housing developments, shop fitting, construction of industrial buildings and property repair and refurbishment.
